Frequently Asked Questions

I haven't been to the dentist in a long time. How does this work?

It’s been how long? Don’t think that you’re the only one who’s ever stepped away from routine appointments! No matter if it’s been 6 months or 6 years, it’s always a good time to see your local Kauai dentist.

There’s no shame in coming in to get your teeth healthy again. We’ll gladly provide you a complete and informative exam. This is what we do — we’ve been helping people like you for a long time and we want you to be confident with your smile!

Will my insurance cover this?

We’re happy to consult with you about your insurance coverage for different procedures. Depending on your insurance, costs may be more or less. We will gladly submit insurance claims for you in order to get the most out of your benefits. Please note that we will collect co-pays and other deductible payments at the time of service.

What is plaque and why is it a bad thing?

Plaque is a soft, sticky material that will build up on the surface of your teeth over time. Plaque contains millions of bacteria, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease without regular removal through brushing and flossing.
Unless removed daily by regular brushing and flossing, plaque eventually hardens into tartar. Brushing and flossing will become more difficult as more and more tartar builds up at the gum line. Over time, as the plaque and bacteria increases, the tissue of the gums can redden, swell, and possibly bleed and become painful when you brush. This condition is called gingivitis, a beginning form of gum disease.
In the never-ending battle to keep plaque down, we recommend the following steps in order to keep your teeth and gums healthy:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day, using a toothbrush with soft bristles and toothpaste with fluoride. This will work to remove plaque from your teeth and protect them from decay.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque from the inner surfaces of your teeth, especially below the gum line.
  • Come in for a cleaning and exam every 6 months.
Why do I need to come in every 6 months?

Ideally, everyone brushes and flosses twice a day. In practice, we see plaque building up over time and hardening into tartar or calculus. This hardened substance can only be removed by the hygienist during your regular cleaning appointments.
A six-month interval serves two purposes. It allows us to remove the build-up on your teeth, and it allows for early detection of potential issues that we can treat before they get too out-of-hand.
